What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains

What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains
We are bombarded by information, thanks in large part to the internet and its allied technologies. But exposure to unlimited information is not the same thing as the ability to capture it as knowledge or synthesize it as understanding. "We are living in a state of perpetual distraction," says Nicholas Carr, "which crowds out the more contemplative, calmer modes of thinking." We need these quieter, less frenetic moments to think conceptually, critically, and creatively.
This video argues that digital multitasking and cute cat videos are undermining the very thought processes that are the essence of our humanity.

Do some of today's top hits sometimes mystify you? What the heck are they saying? What does it mean? In this video, Funny or Die tries to make it easier for you to get it.

If you care about our world, this may make you cry. Midway - Message From the Gyre
Midway Island is 2,000 miles from the nearest continent. It is home to the beautiful Laysan albatross. It is also home to astonishing quantities of plastic trash that has journeyed across the ocean. In this trailer for the forthcoming film, "Midway," Chris Jordan records the epidemic of albtross death caused by ingestion of human waste. He asks, "Do we have the courage to face the realities of our time and allow ourselves to feel deeply enough that it transforms us and our future?"

This Is Water: Re-imagining Everyday Life - O, the maddening tedium of the everyday responsibilities of adult life!
It plagues us because, when traversing a landscape all-too-familiar and all-too-disappointing, the "default setting" of our mentality is to feel victimized by circumstance. We place ourselves in the center of the universal narrative, making the plot-line all about our own misery.
In this video, which animates excerpts of his 2005 commencement address at Kenyon University, novelist David Foster Wallace speaks about personal empowerment in the often stultifying world of responsible adulthood.
The freedom comes from an open-minded awareness of the possibility that there are less self-centered, complex, and gladdening narratives spinning around you -- even in the most frustrating situations. "It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down," he advises. "Not that that mystical stuff is necessarily true. The only thing that's capital-T True is that you get to decide how you're gonna try to see it."

This is hilarious. Very well produced. Great concept!

The Great Gatsby - An Abridged Version - This is very good. You don't need a big budget to make a funny parody video. We were assigned to make a parody/satire of a book we had previously "read" in high school. I'm pretty sure this is how "The Great Gatsby" went...
The Revolutionary Optimists
Children can be powerful change agents. Undaunted, persistent, energetic, creative, and unafraid of adopting new technologies, they can sometimes succeed in tackling entrenched problems where adults have repeatedly failed. Amlan Ganguly understands this dynamic very well. Meet Shikha, Salim, and Priyanka, the bright-eyed kids Ganguly empowers to tackle serious, endemic health problems in their Kolkata slum. "We call ourselves 'The Dakabuko', which means 'the courage of a daredevil'," says Salim, "because to work here, you need courage." The team is more than intrepid; it radiates hopefulness.
This internet video is great! "Why New iPhones are Like New Girlfriends". At CollegeHumor. Very well written, acted, produced and shot. In many ways, our relationship with our smartphone duplicates the rise and fall in our emotional and sexual relationships.

This is really cute. All about falling in love. Very simple and extremely well made. Love Language - a short film about how we connect
Love is a funny thing. As the saying goes, we often find love when we least expect, but it might be equally true that when we do find love it's different than we expected. This beautiful short film was created to raise awareness and money for a good cause, which it did. But it has gone so much further in showing us what love looks like, and how we can connect with each other when we have the courage to break down our own walls and become vulnerable.

We don't usually spotlight PRANK VIDEOS - but this one is truly awesome. Check out the Drive Thru Headless Prank. Yep, you got it, a headless body goes through a fast food drive through restaurant and freaks everyone out!

Bacon Mouthwash Video Is this for real? Are you ready for Bacon Mouthwash?  You got to admit, it does have a few positives going for it.

California Fruit Wine - it is a new wine that you do not have to learn to like California Fruit Wine is an innovative winery in San Diego that handcrafts wine from a variety of fruit other than grapes.  They believe fermented beverages should be easy to drink, enjoyable - even refreshing.  Instead of covering up the fruit with oak or, on the opposite-side, turning the wine into sugar syrup, they strive for well-balanced, fruit-forward, crisp wines.
